Looks like the folks at Sony Ericsson are working towards an iPhone clone in this yet unidentified handset. While certain quarters are sure that this won't be the Japan-bound SO905i Cybershot phone, that would only mean it will be available worldwide to everyone else which is always a good thing. While the iPhone hasn't exactly done too well after the initial euphoria, it cannot be denied that Apple's offering has certainly influenced the design cues for other handsets.

Motorola has the ROKR E8 up waiting in the wings, boasting a rather different design that somewhat resembles the Q9h when viewed from the side. The front section comes with a unique keyboard that features "buds" as keys, illuminating to reveal the characters each bud represents. Linux-Java will be the operating system of choice, and other features include 2GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, stereo Bluetooth connectivity, and a 2 megapixel camera. Whenever the multimedia player is opened, the standard navigation keys and numeric buttons will be hidden, having the dedicated music shortcut keys light up instead. Verizon will be releasing the Samsung U700 and U900 pretty soon, so here are some images of both handsets. The SCH-U700 will come with a 2 megapixel camera, a QVGA internal display, a microSD memory card slot for expansion options, and a brand new FlashUI theme. As for the SCH-U900, it will take over the faithful A900's position and come with a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, an automatic lens cover, a rotating QVGA display, a microSD memory card slot, and front touch-sensitive music controls. NTT DoCoMo has just announced that it will release a couple of new smartphones that run on the Japanese edition of the Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system. Both the FOMA F1100 and FOMA HT1100 will interface with computers via Outlook Mobile and Internet Explorer Mobile, and comes with security options such as McAfee security scan to keep your smartphone safe from external threats. Data entry is achieved via a ten-key input layout, and both handsets will be marketed during the first quarter of next year. No word on pricing for either smartphone as at press time though.

Word on the street has it that the head honchos as Sony Ericsson are currently mulling over the prospect of integrating the PlayStation name into a cellphone. According to Peter Ahnegard who is in charge of all things gaming from Sony Ericsson, "Up until today we haven't felt we could launch a PlayStation phone because it wouldn't be recognised as a true continuation of that brand of products. It's obviously something that we're looking at but right now I can't really comment. Before Christmas, certainly… but exactly which Christmas I can't confirm!". Sounds like a phone-capable PSP is in the works, and I certainly can't help but look forward to it.

The front section is 100% touchscreen with no receiver or bezel in sight. Siemens has teamed up with PalmSecure to create a device that works like a fingerprint reader, except that it scans the palm of your hand and tries to recognize the vein patterns underneath your skin which are unique to each of us.

Although it is an interesting way of using biometrics, it is still a little big and clumsy. It's probably a bit more secure than (whole-thumb) fingerprint readers because the user doesn't actually leave his/her palm print *on* the device. It will probably work for niche markets such as banks or hospitals, but I don't think that this will become popular with consumers anytime soon.

Don't go running for buttplugs just yet - the earth isn't being invaded by extra terrestrial lifeforms, but we do know that Korea is currently being assaulted by UFOs of the Samsung variety. Also known as the SCH-W300/SPH-W30000, this 12.9mm slider handset is said to have that acronym no thanks to the 'Unimaginable, Fast speed and Oh, 7.2Mbps' full length moniker that I think is was concocted in jest no matter how close to home it is. The Samsung UFO is capable of downloading files in under 10 seconds for MP3s, while a relatively short video clip takes less than a minute on the go. You can pick up one for around $637 in magic silver and black pearl colors, although future iterations will come in violet and sapphire blue.

The FCC has finally given their nod of approval to a couple of entry level iDEN handsets, namely the i290 and the i425. Both are slim candybar handsets that share a rather similar style, although the design cues and screen types do differ by a bit. Both handsets are based on a similar platform as the i335. It is most likely that the i295 will be available from sprint, while the i425 will make its debut over at Boost, where the latter will feature a dedicated web access key and voicemail indicator. Ionic cooling for computers

Water-cooled systems have been around for quite some time already, but fans are still the main method of keeping your computer running cool at all times. Ionic cooling is one of the methods developed, being 250% more effective courtesy of the "wind engine" that was developed by researchers over at Purdue University. Using a wee bit of voltage running through it, this engine generates positively charged ions that spread out toward a negatively charged wire, where the ions slice across the chip to keep airflow clean and constant. The only problem would be miniaturizing such an engine before being made available to the masses. Yes the $100 laptop now under mass production level and should be delivered to children in developing countries in the next three months (October 2007). Motorola puts WiFi in RIZR Z3

This has been a long time in coming, but Motorola has finally made the move to include WiFi connectivity into its RIZR Z3 cellphone that will probably be released sometime early 2008. Nevertheless, the Cect 599 comes with a 3.2" WQVGA touchscreen display at 240 x 400 resolution, Bluetooth connectivity, dual speakers, and a 1.3 megapixel camera, all packed into a body that weighs a mere 90 grams. It lacks internal memory of any kind, but thankfully there is a microSD memory card slot to cover up for its weaknesses. The Cect 599 isn't too big on features though, as video playback is restricted to just 176 x 144 pixels. At $150 a pop (unlocked), I'm not sure if you want to pick one up the next time you go for a holiday there.

The mobile giant says it is ready, willing and able to capitalise on users' fondness for surfing on the move

Nokia says the internet will be influential in its growth going forward as more people opt to browse on the move, despite yesterday revising its predicted profit margins and forecasting slower growth in the mobile market next year.

As a result of this web-driven market invigoration, Nokia anticipates that the number of mobile phone users will surpass four million in 2010, fuelled largely by music, mobile TV and navigation services.

The mobile giant's chief executive and president, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, chose his keynote speech at the company's annual mobility conference, Nokia World, in Amsterdam to outline its vision for the future.

Nokia believes that users in emerging markets are increasingly accessing the web for the first time on a mobile device, rather than a traditional PC.

"Mobile communications is once again changing even faster than many of us have predicted and we are still far away from this being a mature market," he told the 2,000-strong audience of mobile and internet stakeholders.

"The internet has transformed the way we live our lives and communicate with each other, and we expect it to play a key role in the next phase of Nokia's growth. The next wave of the internet will be to make it truly mobile, creating new ways for people to connect to others and find information from wherever they are. Nokia intends to be at the forefront of this new era and be the company that truly merges the internet and mobility."

Despite a predicted slowing in users' appetite for mobile devices, Nokia believes it can still tap into the potential of the mobile internet revolution.

"With an estimated 850 million Nokia device users out there, we are positioned to connect more people to the internet than any other company in the world," added Kallasvuo.

"We are actively aligning our strategy in pursuit of this major business opportunity."
